No Shoes and Letters from India

Wear no shoes day is an annual awareness day (April 8), promoted by TOMS. I'm not crazy about TOMS, and I do not own, or plan to own, a pair; honestly, I think they look like toilet paper, but I love this cause.
Actually, I almost forgot that I was not wearing shoes today! This year I saw a few people on campus going barefoot. It was just last year that I felt like I was the only person not wearing shoes. I even went to Wal-Mart without shoes. I debated putting them on or just not even going, but I did it anyway. I guess Wal-Mart doesn't have a shoes policy. It rained a good bit today also, which actually turned out very good for bare feet. It cooled off the what would have been steaming sidewalks and parking lots and made it quite comfortable for my little feet. It really makes you think about what people endure in terrible conditions that have never owned a pair of shoes. I even had to check myself as I complained about the bottom of my feet while going down the stairs at school.
Not wearing shoes raises awareness for "the least of these" that do not even own a pair of shoes, especially in third world countries. If you want to know more, visit the TOMS website.

Also, there are many non- profit organizations for children, such as World Vision and Compassion, that not only focus on basic needs but supply learning centers for children where they learn bible stories, how to read, and learn fun things, like songs and dance. I am a child advocate with Compassion International, and I also sponsor a child through them. It is an amazing experience and blessing.

I received a letter from my Compassion child, Risma, a couple of days ago. Risma is from India and she lives in s small village in a poor area with her family. I get letters from her about 4 or 5 times a year, so it is always a special treat! She is only 7-years-old so she usually just draws pictures for me and the translator will write a short message to me. I love and save all her drawings, like this one.

I especially love this drawing because when I was her age I drew flowers exactly like that. My next agenda for Risma is create a second photo album for her and ship it off to India. She and her family loves to look at pictures; they are considered treasured items.
